It doesn’t require much patience to be a patient these days. Hospitals are increasingly courting our business just like a car dealership might, advertising their cut-rate costs, lightning-fast turnaround times, patient perks, and friendly follow-up. What’s next? Doctors with sandwich boards on the corner? We’re not passive "patients” these days — we are active healthcare "consumers." And as patient satisfaction becomes a key metric, those who are best at getting better won't accept just one option. Still, here's hoping we're never presented the option of a second-hand replacement hip from a little old lady - who used it only on Sundays (and only to walk to church, of course). - Ron Hill
